Bathroom Remodel Guide

Everything you need to know and consider before you start your bathroom remodel.

A bathroom remodel may seem like a smaller project, but there’s a lot that goes into it. Planning a bathroom reno can feel overwhelming if you’re not sure where to start or how to move forward. We’ve created this handy guide to help you as you plan your bathroom remodel.

First, start dreaming.

This is arguably the most fun part of a bathroom remodel! Take note of the layout of your bathroom. What do you love about it as it is right now? What parts are the most frustrating? What things do you want to replace, or add to your bathroom? Make a list of everything you’d have in your dream bathroom in a perfect world. From there, compare it to your current bathroom situation. Looking at that wish list, consider what could be done to make those improvements. It’s even worth ranking each item from most important to least important, so you have a better idea of where you want to focus your budget on. If having more space by carving into a neighboring closet is essential, but replacing your existing vanity is less so, make note of it.
Having a hard time picturing major changes that aren’t already there? Not a problem. Connect with one of our designers and we can help walk through it with you and give you some options!
Hand-in-hand with planning the layout of your bathroom remodel is planning the stylistic design. Time to take a peek at your Pinterest boards and all the screenshots of Instagram posts you’ve saved! Go through them and really nail down what you’d like your dream bathroom to look like, from colors and textures to materials and finishes. Once you’ve decided the direction you want to go, compile the images into a mood board. (Canva is a great tool for this with dozens of templates you can use. You can even make collages right in Pinterest using pins you’ve already saved!) Choose a few general things that are non-negotiables, like “textured tiles”, “steam shower”, or “statement vanity.” This is where you can splurge on, and shows where you know you’re comfortable sacrificing if your budget calls for it. Taking your bathroom mood board to a designer is a great idea, as they can often help guide you into a cohesive and elevated look while considering the layout and restrictions of your current layout.

Next, put pencil to paper and budget.

Budgeting for a remodel can be daunting, especially if you don’t have prior industry knowledge. One helpful tip is to go through each item of your remodel and give a rough allowance. If you’re not sure, Google can help. Once you’ve gone through every item, add them all up and make sure that final number is comfortable to you. If not, go back through and make some cuts. Go for less expensive finishes, or see what you can use from your current bathroom instead of replacing it.

Once you’re happy with the proposed budget, it’s time to begin! Though bathrooms are small, depending on the size of your project, a bathroom remodel can still take some time. Make sure your schedule allows for that…meaning, if you’re redoing a guest bathroom, don’t plan on having guests stay with you until it’s completed.

Finally, enjoy your new bathroom.

There’s nothing better than stepping into your dream space. We may think of the living room or kitchen being the most important area of a house, but elevating your bathroom can really make a huge difference in how you enjoy your home.
